The defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in an unfamiliar position, as the final days of the regular season see the wounded Western Conference power eyeing the improved health of LeBron James while fighting for playoff positioning.
Meanwhile, teams like the Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards find themselves playing their best basketball at the close of the season, with superstars Stephen Curry, Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook elevating their teams level of play as they chase the scoring title, triple-double history and, most importantly, wins.
In what seeds could the Lakers and Miami Heat last year s NBA finalists find themselves? Will Jayson Tatum be able to shoulder the load for the Celtics after losing fellow All-Star Jaylen Brown for the rest of the season? Can young stars lead the Memphis Grizzlies and the Charlotte Hornets back to the playoffs for the first time in years?

BOSTON The Celtics did all they needed to offensively against the Heat. They scored 124 then 121 points against Miami as the C’s offense, at least, was humming at an efficient level.
But those gaudy point totals were out of necessity and they were bested twice. The Heat won in a pair of high-scoring games: 130-124 on Sunday then 129-121 on Tuesday. Miami did just about anything it wanted to do offensively and was scorching from 3-point land. The Heat followed up a 45.7% performance in Game 1 with a 53.3% showing in Game 2.

The Celtics will be without key center depth, which makes a win in a crucial game that much more difficult. Big man Robert Williams III was downgraded from doubtful to out on Tuesday’s injury report because of left foot turf toe.
