COMMENTARY: Working together, we re bringing broadband to rural Virginia

By Sen. Jennifer S. Boysko THE FOUNDATION of modern life has changed over the past year. Many of us are working from home and many of our kids are attending virtual school. The pandemic has also highlighted the divide between rural and urban communities when it comes to high-speed broadband internet access. Everyone deserves access to high-speed internet, and partnerships like the one recently announced by All Points Broadband, Northern Neck Electric Cooperative (NNEC), and Dominion Energy in Virginia’s Northern Neck are bringing diverse organizations together to tackle this challenge head on. As the chair of the Broadband Advisory Council, I have worked to support partnerships like this, which will be critical to deploy broadband in some of the most difficult-to-serve regions in our commonwealth.

Northern Neck broadband project gets more funding

A Northern Neck partnership working to bring fiber-optic broadband to 7,500 unserved locations has gotten another $8.5 million in federal grants for a total of $18.8 million in funding. The additional money marks the second time in two weeks that the partnership, which involves an assortment of businesses and government entities, has gotten financial support for the regional fiber-to-the-home broadband network. The project will serve homes and businesses in King George, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland counties. “The last few weeks represent a watershed moment in our long journey,” said Jerry W. Davis, executive director of the Northern Neck Planning District Commission. “There is a lot of work to be done, but we’re in a better position than ever before and the objective is finally in sight.”
