The bill also empowers the minister to sanction and withdraw the license of any print media that violates the ‘National Press Code’. Section 33 (3) of bill also says that “any person who carries news established to be fake news thereafter, commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to a fine of N5 million or two years in prison or both.” And the print media that carried the ‘fake news’ shall be liable to a fine of N10 million and/or closure for one year! This clause deliberately ignores existing media laws which provides for retraction and apology where a media organisation errs in publishing a story.

Buhari, yesterday, received Governors Ben Ayade.President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, received Governors Ben Ayade and Bello Matawalle of Cross River and Zamfara states, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The duo was accompanied to the State House, Abuja, by the Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, with his Kebbi counterpart and chair of Progressives Governors Forum, Atiku Bugudu and their Jigawa colleague, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar. Buhari, who handed the flags of the party to the two-state chief executives, thanked them for coming on board.

Battle to Remove Matawalle Begins, Court Fixes July for Suit

PDP files joinder application Alex Enumah The Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja has fixed July 16 for the hearing of a suit, which kick-started the legal battle by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unseat the Governor of Zamfara State, Hon. Bello Matawalle, for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The suit, filed in the names of two PDP members from Zamfara State, Sani Ahmed and Abubakar Muhammed, is seeking to oust the governor for dumping the PDP. The duo, in the suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/489/2021 is contending that in view of an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court that the APC had no candidates in the 2019 governorship election in Zamfara State, having not conducted valid primaries, it would be unlawful for Matawalle to retain his office while defecting from the PDP to the APC, and thereby transfer PDP’s victory to the APC.
