DUMPED CHICKENS: Who will rescue Princess Layer?
| Updated: 07:42, 18 January 2021
CHICKENS are being abandoned after people who bought flocks during lockdown now canât take care of them, according to the RSPCA.
And the problem has been exacerbated by the arrival of bird flu.
The animal welfare charity, which operates across England and Wales, is concerned at the number of hens and cockerels being abandoned and fears rescue centres will soon be overrun with birds.
The organisation said more than 1,500 chickens were abandoned last year and it was called to 13 incidents in Warwickshire involving abandonment or cruelty to chickens.
Kate Parkes, the RSPCAâs poultry welfare specialist, said: âWeâre concerned that worries about bird flu and changes to how weâre allowed to keep hens may lead to more owners abandoning their pets, putting more pressure on rescue centres.â

Volunteer vaccinator: Why I signed up for jab rollout
| Updated: 13:05, 16 January 2021
The question on everyoneâs mind at the moment is when they or their vulnerable loved ones will be offered a vaccination against Covid-19.
There is no doubt that the rollout of the vaccines is a huge undertaking. The governmentâs initial aim is to inoculate 25 million people in the first nine ranked groups based on age and health conditions. Although there is no news on timescales, prime minister Boris Johnson has said he believed people would be seeing a âdifferent world from Easterâ.
The government has also said it will need help in stepping up the vaccination â and thatâs where volunteers like Stratford town councillor Gill Cleeve come in.
