The Wall of Sound has crumbled. Phil Spector is dead, and it is hard to know how to feel about that. Spector was both hero and villain, a musical genius and deeply unpleasant human being. Do we lament one of the legendary architects of modern pop, the original Tycoon of Teen, the first true auteur of rock and roll, whose visionary approach to songwriting and production helped shape the soundtrack of our times?
Phil Spector, who died Saturday of COVID-19 complications, started out his music career in high school in California and went on to work with The Beatles, before was jailed for murder.
