Google to shut down its light-weight IoT version of android early next year

Google has announced that Android Things, a heavily stripped-down Android-based operating system for Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, will shut down early next year. The Android Things Dashboard, which is used for managing devices, will stop accepting new devices and projects in just three weeks-on January 5, 2021. Developers will be able to continue updating existing deployments until January 5, 2022, the company said in a statement. After the given date, the console will be shut down completely for non-commercial use and all project data will be permanently deleted. The only products that can run Android Things will be the ones built on commercial hardware SoMs (system-on-modules) from vendors like NXP, Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Google has revealed that the Internet-of-Things platform is joining its ever growing pile of retired products in an FAQ page for developers. The tech giant originally launched Android Things as an operating system for all kinds of IoT devices until it decided to change the platform’s focus and make it a dedicated OS for speakers and displays OEMs can use for their products last year. “Following in line with those updates,” Google wrote in the FAQ page, “we are turning down the Android Things Console for non-commercial use.” The Android Things console will stop accepting new projects starting on January 5th, 2021, which is just a few weeks away. Developers can continue using the console to roll out over-the-air updates, among other things, for their existing projects for another year. On January 5th, 2022, Google will shut the console down and delete all projects and data.

Google kills off Android Things, adding yet another product to its ever-growing graveyard

Google plans on shuttering its struggling Android Things platform. Android Things was a stripped-down version of Android designed to work on Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. Existing developers will have up to January 2022 to keep running their existing deployments before Google s console stop working and all data is deleted. When it launched back in 2018, Google s Android Things platform seemed like an up-and-coming, low-cost alternative for IoT manufacturers and enthusiasts that could potentially bring some degree of standardization to the IoT world. We were certainly quite optimistic about its future. Well, time certainly hasn t been kind to the fledgling IoT platform. After a strategic pivot to smart displays and speakers last year, Google has officially decided to kill off the platform entirely for the most part. A recently updated FAQ page, spotted by
