The number of active cases has finally decreased, but hospitalized cases continued to increase, which has become a focus of concern. Speaking to this point, B.C. health officials gave a presentation on the status of hospitalizations in the province. Health orders are being extended, with travel restrictions soon to be implemented. Meanwhile, vaccination registration opens this week for those in their 40s to those who are 18 years old. In addition, there were 26 flights with exposures and nine more businesses closed by health authorities.

Provincial health officer Bonnie Henry regularly provides updates on the spread of COVID-19 in B.C.B.C. government With the number of people actively battling COVID-19 infections in B.C. hitting an all-time high, record numbers of people are also in hospitals, and in intensive care units with the disease.  The good news for British Columbians is that the province has put together two days in a row with all-time high numbers of newly vaccinated people – the first such two-day stretch in a week. The vast majority of the 10,081 people now fighting COVID-19 infections have been told to self-isolate, although 425 are in hospital, with 127 of those being in intensive care units.

BC Centre for Disease Control officials detected 873 new infections in the past day, which may sound high, but it is the lowest number of cases identified in a 24-hour period since 832 cases were found on April 1.  Health officials warned that the number may be revised because of a glitch in the reporting system.  The new cases raise the total number of COVID-19 infections in B.C. to 113,702, since researchers discovered the first infection in the province in January, 2020. Almost 90%, or 102,268 people, are deemed by the province to have recovered.
