COVID-19: Taylor County adds 1 death, 112 cases; inpatients dip to 63 The deceased is a woman in her 70s. The average age of the deceased is 75. The 112 new cases are based on 57 polymerase chain reaction tests and 55 antigen tests. Active cases total 2,351 (997 PCR cases and 1,254 antigen cases). A week ago on Jan. 21, active cases totaled 2,524. COVID-19 inpatients at Abilene hospitals dropped significantly to 63, compared to 75 on Wednesday. The peak COVID-19 inpatient number was 139 reported Jan. 3-4.  The most recent surge in hospitalizations began three months ago, when inpatients climbed from 52 on Nov. 1 to 109 on Nov. 30. The number stayed higher than 100, except for a few dips in the 90s in December, until the recent drop.

The total number of county deaths connected to COVID-19 is 270. The deceased are two men in their 70s, a woman in her 70s and a man in his 50s, city officials said. The average age of the deceased is 75. Of the 98 new cases, 54 are confirmed with polymerase chain reaction tests and 44 with antigen tests.  Active cases total 2,502 (1,111 PCR cases and 1,391 antigen cases). A week ago, active cases numbered 2,585.  COVID-19 inpatients at Abilene hospitals dipped to 84, 12 fewer than reported on Monday. The last time the inpatient figure was near that number was Nov. 18, at 83. Hendrick Health on Monday reported the COVID-19 inpatient number for Abilene s trauma service area was 16.4% of the area s total hospital beds, down from 17.07% reported Sunday.

Honorary pallbearers include the Deacons of the North Jefferson Church of Christ, Directors of Guaranty Bancshares, Guaranty Bank & Trust, Sondra Cunningham, and his grandsons. Burial will follow at Nevill’s Chapel Cemetery. There will not be a graveside service.

In-person debating matches weren’t feasible this fall, but the team adapted by moving to virtual competitions. In the season opener, hosted by Lee College in Baytown, Texas, junior communications major Kara Taylor was a starting semifinal. Skylar Dean, a senior political science major, won third place for speakers in the junior varsity division. Junior Electrical Engineering Major Neel Patel was a starting quarter-finalist in the competition hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Tech alumnus Kendrick Kruskie, a budding competitor last year, took second place for speaker award in the professional division.

Tech alumnus Kendrick Kruskie, a novice competitor last year, earned the second place speaker award in the professional division.
