Abilene ISD trustees affirm mask requirement stays in effect
Abilene Independent School District trustees affirmed a commitment to health and safety protocols, including universal mask use, during their school board meeting Monday.
Trustees were met with vocal opposition to the policy, including nine emails sent from parents during the public comment portion and several folks in the limited audience holding signs with messages calling masks abuse and demanding they be allowed to breathe.
Yet, trustees opted to not change their policies designed to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 spreading in schools.
It echoes the district s stance taken shortly after Gov. Greg Abbott said he d lift his statewide mask mandate March 2. It was lifted March 10 through a executive order.

Abilene Independent School District officials worried about a significant revenue shortfall due to decreased enrollment in 2020-21 got a big boost Thursday.
Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Education Agency said hold harmless will be extended through the remainder of the school year.
The policy was enacted during the spring 2020 semester, allowing districts such as Abilene ISD to report, for revenue sake, attendance figures from 2018-19 while navigating the pandemic. This is a great thing for the students of the Abilene ISD, Chief Financial Officer Joe Waldron said Thursday. Hold harmless is optional, though districts opting into the reporting method must do so for all subsets of student groups, including reporting on special education students, those enrolled in career and technical education classes and more.

Water may be restored into south Abilene by this evening, city officials said in a news conference Tuesday morning.
But that will require the help of residents to make sure that pressure is restored throughout the city s system by keeping taps turned off. And then to boil water for two minutes for drinking and cooking use.
The city will alert residents when sufficient pressure is restored, City Manager Robert Hanna said at a morning news conference.
If power is maintained at the city s northeast treatment plant, it was hoped water service could be returned into south Abilene by day s end.
