ID delayed in fatal Bethlehem Twp. fire, cause undetermined The Independent BETHLEHEM TWP.  It could take some time before officials release the name of the person who died in a house fire Wednesday. Stark County Coroner s Office said the body was badly damaged, making the formal identification process more difficult. The victim became trapped in the basement of a home at 10216 Erie St. SW at 1:28 a.m. Wednesday. When firefighters arrived the home was fully engulfed, Erie Valley Fire Chief Rick Annen said. Shortly after their arrival, the home collapsed. Two adults escaped but were unable to rescue the third person.

Fatal fire investigated in Alliance Friday Victim is 40-year-old man

ALLIANCE A 40-year-old man who was in a garage when an apparent explosion occurred died Friday, according to the Stark County Coroner s Office. James M. Phillis was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire at 6:15 p.m., said Harry Campbell, chief investigator with the coroner s office. Firefighters had responded about 5 p.m. to a report of a garage fully engulfed in flames in the 1200 block of S Liberty Avenue. Heavy smoke was visible when firefighters arrived. An explosion apparently occurred after Phillis had entered the garage, Campbell said. The detached garage was near Phillis home, he said. Campbell said Phillis death is being investigated as a fire fatality.

Man found dead Monday in a creek identified as Canton Township resident

CANTON  The body of a man found in the Nimishillen Creek Monday has been identified as Roger Daniel Lucas, 46, of Canton Township, according to the Stark County Coroner s Office. Details of how he came to be in the creek were not available as authorities continued to investigate on Tuesday. A truck driver looking down off the Interstate 77 bridge spotted the body, about a mile and a half south of downtown. Authorities have said that the person had been reported missing Jan. 5.  Police Chief Jack Angelo has indicated there was nothing to indicate foul play was involved in the man s death.
