AC regents complete purchase for future First Responders Center

Nearly five months after the Amarillo College Board of Regents authorized Chris Sharp, vice president of business affairs, to accept an offer from the Crouch Foundation for the old JC Penney building at 3701 Plains Blvd., the board approved the purchase during its Tuesday meeting. The building will be the location of the college’s new First Responders Center, bringing programs from the East and West campuses under one roof, with the potential of hosting other programs currently housed at the East Campus. The regents approved the purchase price of $625,000. According to previous Globe-News reports, the regents saw an opportunity to partner with Amarillo Independent School District s AmTech Career Academy project, which is located at 3601 Plains Blvd. With the proximity of the First Responders Center, the partnership could create further synergy between the college and the school district, officials said. 

Community members prepare for Amarillo s MLK Day festivities

Members of the community, as well as various organizations throughout Amarillo, are preparing to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day throughout the city in a new way.  Representatives of local churches, businesses and community members will participate in a march at 11 a.m. Monday from New Hope Baptist Church, located at 900 N. Hayden St., to Bones Hooks Park, located at 2000 N. Hughes St., in honor of the holiday.  When individuals arrive at the park after the march is completed, there will be a short program, consisting of prayer, speeches from community members as well as music and dance, all of which is centered around the theme of “Be The Change.”

Amarillo ISD opens pre-registration for career academy

Officials with the Amarillo Independent School District announced Thursday that students can now pre-register for classes at the AmTech Career Academy, the district s new career and technical education high school which is set to open in the fall.  According to previous reporting by the Amarillo Globe-News, the academy will be an expansion of the Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning (AACAL) and will be located at 3601 Plains. The name for the facility was approved during.an October 2019 meeting of the district s board of trustees.  Students who wish to attend the academy are required to complete the pre-registration form, which can be accessed at https://amtech.amaisd.org/admissions, according to a news release from the district. This includes students who may not be attended courses at the school in their freshman year of high school. 

Process starts for May s School Board elections

Process starts for May s school board elections The school board election process officially started this week, with the application process for the open seats for the Amarillo Independent School District, Canyon ISD and River Road ISD, opening Wednesday. The election is set for May 1.  According to previous Globe-News reports, there are four positions that will be open for each of the respective districts.  Canyon ISD and River Road ISD For voters who live in Canyon and River Road ISDs, there will be four seats to fill for each respective board. The open positions in Canyon ISD are currently held by Randy Darnell, Bill Jenkins, Matt Parker and Jennifer Winegarner. The open positions in River Road ISD are currently held by Amanda Brown, Danielle Coleman, Dana Finley and Brian Shannon.
