Potter, Randall counties see increase of early voting

Thousands of voters in Potter and Randall counties have already taken advantage of early voting for the general election scheduled for Saturday.  According to previous Globe-News reports, the ballots for this election include numerous city- and school-related races throughout the cities of Amarillo and Canyon.  This includes spots on the Amarillo City Council and Canyon City Commission; the mayor’s race for both cities; the Amarillo College board of regents; as well as the school boards for Amarillo Independent School District, Canyon ISD and River Road ISD. According to the county’s election administration website, 4,727 voters cast early ballots in Potter County, with 1,258 voting at Hillside Christian Church NW, 1,098 voting at the Santa Fe Building and 1,060 voting at Casey Carpet One. 

Potter County officials discuss federal funds of American Rescue Plan

During Monday’s regular meeting of the Potter County Commissioners’ Court, officials with the court discussed the funds that Potter County is set to receive from the American Rescue Plan of 2021, signed into law earlier this year by President Joe Biden.  According to previous reports by the Amarillo Globe-News, the American Rescue Plan of 2021 gave $1.9 trillion of additional COVID-19 relief for Americans, with a little more than half of the funds given to states and cities for COVID-19 aid.  Mercy Murguia, a member of the Potter County Commissioners’ Court, stated during the meeting that out of the $1.9 trillion in relief, $5.6 billion went to counties in the state of Texas, which officials are allocating based on population. 

Election 2021: City council candidates

In May s general election, one of the races voters will be making their voices heard on is who will be four members of the city council for Amarillo for the next term. The new members of the city council will join the person elected to be Amarillo s mayor, a race which is also on May s election ballot. A preview for that specific race ran previously in print and is available on the Amarillo Globe-News website. The Globe-News reached out to all 12 candidates running for the four places on Amarillo s city council. Each candidate was asked a set of questions via email, and those answers are presented in a question and answer format below. 

Amarillo ISD Board takes action to make progress on AmTech Career Academy

Amarillo ISD Board takes action to make progress on AmTech Career Academy During the most recent meeting of the Amarillo Independent School District Board of Trustees, the board took action on numerous measures, helping the AmTech Career Academy progress to its initial opening for students in August.  According to previous reporting by the Amarillo Globe-News, students were given the initial opportunity to pre-register for classes at AmTech, located at 3601 Plains, in January.  The academy will be an expansion of the Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning (AACAL) and will have nine schools, including the School of Architecture, Construction and Manufacturing, as well as the School of Medical Arts. Those schools consist of more than 30 pathways for students, including animal science, plumbing and audio/visual (TV) production.
