CHR assures full support in gov t probes on human rights violations like EJKs – Manila Bulletin

Commission on Human Rights (MANILA BULLETIN) Last Sunday, Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra announced the participation of the CHR in the investigation on the March 7 deaths of nine activists in South Luzon provinces. Guevarra said the inter-agency committee formed in 2012 to investigate EJK incidents reached out to the CHR to help in the probe. The CHR is an independent constitutional office that investigates all forms of human rights violations involving civil and political rights. Under Administrative Order No. 35 that created the inter-agency committee, the participation of the CHR in the committee is limited to being “observer and resource person.” Through Spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia, the CHR said Guevarra’s statement was a welcome development for the commission which has been keen in ensuring that human rights are upheld in all illegal drugs operations.

Using its Right of Reply under the Agenda Item 4 at the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council in response to a statement by Pakistan s representative, India also said that Pakistan must stop preaching and focus on its responsibility towards the millions suffering in the country.

Potable water reuse: City of Cape Town must take a prec

The term “potable water reuse” is a euphemism for the recovery of drinking water from sewage effluents. Potable water reuse is a concept that has become prominent due to the water scarcity experienced in various places in our country and elsewhere. The idea is to recover the liquid fraction from sewage and purify it to drinking water standards, then distribute it via the potable water reticulation systems. This has been done in practice for several years in Beaufort West in order to augment their potable water supply. The City of Cape Town announced on 7 March 2021 that it will be injecting water reclaimed from sewage into the City’s potable drinking water supply during the period March to May 2021, while admitting to neither having had open public participation meetings nor having received final approval from the appointed authorities.
