MUMBAI: A day after his meeting with Rahul Gandhi, Maharashtra assembly Speaker Nana Patole submitted his resignation to deputy speaker Narwari Zirwal on Thursday. The 57-year-old Patole is set to be soon appointed as the state Congress president in place of Balasaheb Thorat, who had offered to quit a month ago in keeping with the Congress party s policy of one man, one post .
Patole s decision appears to have created a rift among the MVA partners on who will be the new speaker. While Thorat took the view that a Congress nominee will be the new speaker, the architect of the MVA, NCP president Sharad Pawar, said a discussion on the matter was essential. We will discuss and then take a decision, Pawar said. Patole declined to comment on Pawar s suggestion, saying he was a senior leader of the alliance.

MUMBAI: In the runup to the civic polls, the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC appears to be wooing Mumbaikars by promising to resolve flooding issues at 386 spots in the city before monsoon. Civic officials said they have already completed work at 171 spots and prepared a detailed plan for the rest. They will soon make a presentation on the issue to chief minister and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.
On Thursday, Yuva Sena president and Maharashtra environment minister Aaditya Thackeray along with transport minister Anil Parab took a review meeting of BMC’s preparedness to resolve the flooding issue where they also discussed the possibility of constructing an underground tank.
He is a labour union leader with declared assets running into crores, has landed property in Dubai, and stays next to Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan in the tony, upmarket suburb of Bandra in Mumbai.
Now, as the new president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC), Ashok aka Bhai Jagtap is the man tasked with reviving the Congress in the city, and lead it in the crucial elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in early 2022.
Jagtap takes over from former Lok Sabha MP Eknath Gaikwad, who was the acting president of the MRCC, after former union minister Milind Deora stepped down from the position.

Party opts for Marathi face to prepare for BMC elections
Senior leader and MLC Ashok alias Bhai Jagtap will be the new president of the Mumbai unit of Congress, the party announced on Saturday. He will lead the city unit ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, scheduled to be held in 2022. Mr. Jagtap replaces former MP Eknath Gaikwad.
Mr. Jagtap’s appointment comes after months of speculation over a number of names which were making the rounds within the party for the coveted post.
