As she joined the British royal family, tabloids began targeting Markle the former actress from the U.S. who married Prince Harry with racist, sexist headlines. The media attacks hurt her friends and family and sent her into depression, she recalled.
Markle said she felt the hateful articles would end if she no longer existed. I knew if I didn t say it, that I would do it. I just didn t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening, constant thought, Markle told Oprah Winfrey during the bombshell interview on CBS.

While it is still too early to tell if COVID-19 has had an impact on suicide numbers, data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention shows that suicide is the 9th overall leading cause of death in Iowa, and the second leading cause of death among those ages 10 to 34

MASON CITY, Iowa - The pandemic has impacted each of us differently. For some, the distancing from friends and family and severe reduction in socializing has to mental health issues, including depression, and worse, suicide.
Data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) shows that suicide is the 9th overall leading cause of death in Iowa, and the second leading cause of death among those ages 10 to 34. To put that in perpsective, one person takes their life roughly every 18 hours in the Hawkeye State.
“I was supposed to be stronger than that,” she said.
Meghan who for years has been the subject of intense, often racist, scrutiny in the UK press no longer felt like herself.
Thoughts of suicide kept her up at night and terrified her.
Her feelings became so intense that when she opened up to her husband, Prince Harry, she told him she couldn’t be left alone.
“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she told Oprah Winfrey in her first interview since she and Harry stepped down as senior members of Britain’s royal family. “And that was a very clear and real and frightening, constant thought.”
