Paul G. Johnson, 60, died unexpectedly on Feb. 8, 2021 at his home in Waldoboro. He was born Sept. 8, 1960 in Rockland to Jesse Johnson and Winona Miller Johnson. Paul grew up in Waldoboro and graduated from Medomak Valley High School in the class of 1978.
After high school he worked for the Poiriers of Massachusetts in the salt factory at Upton Fuel Company for a short time. Soon after, Paul returned to work on the water as a fisherman back home. He dug clams, built traps and lobstered with his father and brothers, even hauled his own gear by hand out of a wooden flat bottom skiff built by his father Jesse and Fernald Carter. Paul was an elver fisherman, went pogie seining, was an urchin tender for many cold winters, and had his own lobster boat for awhile …
SALT LAKE CITY A Utah lawmaker wants to allow people experiencing a crisis to sign up for a list that would bar them from buying a gun from a retail store for a limited period of time.
Bill sponsor Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, emphasized HB267 is not a so-called red-flag law, a type of law that allows close family members to request law enforcement to remove guns from those considered at-risk.
He sees the bill instead impacting, for example, someone discharged from the hospital after a suicide attempt. While they re in a better state of mind, they can say, You know what, I m going to let a friend hold my firearms until I get feeling better, and I don t want to be able to, in a moment of weakness, purchase a firearm. So they could then put their name on that list, Eliason explained.

KALAMAZOO, MI The family of a 29-year-old man who died by suicide in the Kalamazoo County Jail on Dec. 17 continues to search for answers.
Chase David Dalton Lovell, of Galesburg, was taken into custody on Dec. 15 after allegedly starting a fire in his room at Ascension Borgess Hospital earlier that day. Lovell was arraigned in Kalamazoo County District Court on Dec. 16 on a charge of first-degree arson. His bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety.

Suicide rates were lower than in previous years across all Hawaii counties during the COVID-19 pandemic, and while this trend is encouraging, state officials continue to work year-round to spread awareness and push suicide prevention, especially among young adults.
Given the amount of financial and emotional stress caused by the pandemic, early 2020 data provided by the state Department of Health does not indicate a significant connection of suicide to COVID-19; the average number of deaths by suicide were higher in February just before the pandemic hit and lowest in April, June, September and December.
“Conclusion was no apparent increase in deaths by suicide in 2020 compared to previous years, in any county,” said Dr. Dan Galanis, a state epidemiologist in DOH’s Injury Prevention Branch. “I think there have been reports on Mainland suicide that indicate an increase, however.”
