WASHINGTON The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass bipartisan legislation intended to curb hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Thursday, an issue that has spiked during the pandemic.
Written in part by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., the legislation expedites review of hate crimes by the U.S. Department of Justice and bolster reporting mechanisms. It is expected to pass the House and be signed into law by President Joe Biden. Led by Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, the bill would be the eighth signed into law by Biden.

The global climate crisis is anticipated to have far-reaching effects from rising sea levels to hotter temperatures to more frequent extreme weather events all of which are expected to negatively affect human health. Among developed countries, the United States has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, and Black pregnant and postpartum people are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared with their white counterparts.

More West Virginians died of drug overdoses in 2020 than in any previous year on record, according to new data showing the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on the addiction crisis.
At least
West Virginians died of an overdose in 2020 a 45% increase from the 878 deaths in 2019, according to the preliminary data. And because the data could still be updated, the actual number of deaths is likely higher.
Kanawha County led the state with 207 drug overdose deaths up 33% from 2019. But in smaller counties, the increases were more substantial.
