Yet, the specific issues and concerns facing Indigenous people in cities, and the positive protective factors their vibrant urban communities generate are often overlooked and poorly understood. This has been particularly so under COVID-19 pandemic conditions. In the spring of 2020, the United Nations High Commissioner Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples called for information on the impacts of COVID-19 for Indigenous peoples. New Indigenous program to offer grant funding to Bois Forte Band

On Monday, the Northland Foundation announced a new program to partner with the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and other tribal nations and Indigenous communities in northeastern Minnesota. The program features grassroots grants up to $2,500 to individuals and informal groups rather than nonprofit organizations, school districts or governments — a unique offering in the world of philanthropy. The eligible geographic service area includes the Bois Forte Band, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. In addition, the grants are available to individuals and groups in St. Louis, Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching and Lake counties.
