Professor Anup Malani among Eight UChicago Faculty Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

University News Office April 23, 2021 Professor Anup Malani was among eight members of the University of Chicago faculty elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. Malani is the Law School s Lee and Brena Freeman Professor and a professor at the Pritzker School of Medicine. He conducts research in law and economics, health economics and development economics. His research in law and economics focuses on judicial behavior, methods for measuring the contents and causal impact of laws, and the legal implications of blockchain. His health economics research focuses on control of infectious diseases (including coronaviruses and influenza), the value of medical innovation and health care insurance, conflicts of interest in medicine and placebo effects. In development economics, Malani is involved in multiple projects in India focused on health care financing and the quality of life in slums.

Grossmont College Literary Arts Festival to celebrate 25th year

EAST COUNTY    The Grossmont College Literary Arts Festival is back after a one-year COVID-19 hiatus, marking its 25th anniversary with virtual events starting Monday and running through Thursday. The free festival, open to the public, is put on by the English Department’s Creative Writing program and highlights poetry, memoirs, literature and student writings. It also provides an opportunity to hear writers nationwide discuss their inspirations and challenges. Bridget Riley | Biography, Op Art, Paintings, & Facts

Riley spent her childhood in Cornwall and attended Goldsmiths College (1949–52; now part of the University of London) and the Royal College of Art (1952–55; B.A.). Until 1960 she painted primarily impressionistic landscapes and figures. Her study of the Pointillists, particularly Georges Seurat, led her to experiment with colour juxtaposition and optical effects, and under the influence of Victor Vasarely and others, her work took on a geometric abstraction, in which intricate patterns of black and white and, later, alternating colours were calculated to produce illusions of movement and topography. In 1965 she participated with Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, and others in a noteworthy international exhibition entitled “The Responsive Eye” at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.
