US health workers first in line for vaccine | News, Sports, Jobs

The Associated Press Health care workers around the country rolled up their sleeves for the first COVID-19 shots Monday as hope that an all-out vaccination effort can defeat the coronavirus smacked up against the heartbreaking reality of 300,000 U.S. deaths. “Relieved,” proclaimed critical care nurse Sandra Lindsay after becoming one of the first to be inoculated at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. “I feel like healing is coming.” With a countdown of “3-2-1,” workers at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center gave initial injections to applause. And in Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis personally opened a delivery door to the FedEx driver and signed for a package holding 975 precious frozen doses of vaccine made by Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech.

Sovah Health in Martinsville and Danville each have received 975 Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine doses and are administering them in small batches, as they get used to the process. On Tuesday, the day the vaccine was received, 15 doctors and nurses in Martinsville and 10 in Danville were vaccinated. “Part of this way to try to make sure that we understood the relatively complex processes for reconstituting” the vaccine, Sovah-Danville Chief Operating Officer John Kent said during a press conference Wednesday over Zoom. Chief Medical Officer Sheranda Gunn-Nolan talks about the vaccine from Pfizer during a conference call on Wednesday. SPECIAL REPORT-As more women fill America s jails, medical

By Peter Eisler, Linda So, Jason Szep and Grant Smith Dec 16 (Reuters) - By the time anyone at the Milwaukee County Jail noticed Shade Swayzer had given birth alone in a filthy cell, her baby was dead. Swayzer had arrived a week earlier, on July 6, 2016, picked up after a dispute with a hotel clerk and charged with disorderly conduct and a parole violation from an old burglary conviction. She was clearly pregnant, just a few weeks from her due date, and police had her evaluated at a hospital before bringing her to jail. The fetus was deemed active and healthy, and Swayzer cleared for detention.
