UW-Madison med school residency trains OB-GYNs at rural hospitals

WAUPUN - Eighteen years ago, Dr. Scott Hansfield left his obstetrics and gynecology practice in Chicago and moved to a place three hours north and about 2.6 million people fewer.  At Waupun Memorial Hospital, Hansfield schedules his vacations around his patients due dates and sets aside five or 10 minutes in each woman s annual exam to get caught up on what s happened in her life over the past year.  He s the only OB-GYN at the hospital and considers it more of a lifestyle than a job. If a delivery happens late at night or in the early morning, he can spend 72 hours straight at work. Other weeks, when no one in the city of about 11,000 or its surrounding areas is having a baby, things can be pretty quiet.

Pharmacists Will Be Able To Prescribe Hormonal Birth Control

Originally published on July 22, 2021 4:17 pm Governor J.B. Pritzker signed legislation Thursday that will allow pharmacists in the state to dole out hormonal birth control, including the pill. The new law, which takes effect in January, requires pharmacists to get education that will include how to counsel patients and an assessment for screening. State Senator Melinda Bush, a Grayslake Democrat, sponsored the measure. “We believe that family planning and reproductive health care are personal choices that should never be limited by economic or social status,” she said. Insurance plans, including Medicaid, that will pay for doctor-prescribed birth control, must also cover pharmacist-direct means after January First, 2023.
