Anti-Racist Education Is Neither Frederick M Hess and J Grant Addison

Posted By Ruth King on December 19th, 2020 Well-meaning Americans are being suckered into an illiberal political cabal. Days before the Fourth of July, the famed KIPP charter schools announced they’d be abandoning their longtime slogan: “Work Hard, Be Nice.” In a statement, KIPP’s leaders said they were dumping the decades-old slogan because “Working hard and being nice is not going to dismantle systemic racism.” KIPP lamented that the mantra encourages students to be “compliant and submissive” and “supports the illusion of meritocracy.” The missive closed by declaring that the slogan was at odds with KIPP’s goal: “Schools that are actively anti-racist.”

Physics - Equitable Admissions in the Time of COVID-19

Equitable Admissions in the Time of COVID-19 2University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA December 17, 2020• Physics 13, 199 For this graduate admissions season and beyond, holistic review can help departments look beyond the tip of the iceberg of their applicants. × The COVID-19 pandemic, the Trump administration’s restrictions on international students, and a national movement for racial justice are compelling many physics programs in the US to rethink graduate admissions. While many leading programs have begun to make changes in recent years, others now have a new sense of urgency to reexamine their processes. To equitably evaluate applicants and avoid further disadvantaging the students most affected by these many challenges, we advocate for holistic review in graduate admissions review processes that systematically and thoughtfully take into account a variety of applicant experiences and credentials.

16 charts that changed the way we looked at America s schools in a year unlike any other

Never before has the American education system been put under a microscope sometimes literally the way it was in 2020. That’s because COVID-19 illustrated just how much about schools we take for granted. Education research examines all kinds of things that take place inside the walls of schools, from science lessons and gym classes to sick days and suspensions. But experts have never had to think about what might happen if all of it the hugs, the free breakfasts, the standardized tests, even the buildings themselves simply went away. This spring, that’s exactly what happened, stranding tens of millions of students in academic limbo even as this sentence was being written.
