SEVIERVILLE â Thousands of motorcycles are expected in downtown Sevierville this Sunday for the Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride.
The ride starts with a program at the Sevier County Courthouse, with setup at 8 a.m. and program starting at 10 a.m. before the motorcycles start the 65-mile ride to Clinch Mountain Veterans Overlook.
Vietnam War veteran Ron Giddis felt called to start the Memorial Day weekend ride 21 years ago as he thought about the friends and family he lost due to Vietnam.
âSo Memorial Day weekend has always had special meaning for me and folks who likewise have lost friends and family to combat,â Giddis said.
The two new buildings would be located on unused property near the American Eagle Foundation.
The need for affordable housing for workers in the area has been a concern in Sevier County for years â including the need for J1 workers who come here on temporary visas and supplement the workforce during busy seasons.
âItâs pleasing to see a big company like that take control of that and provide housing for employees,â Commissioner Tony Kyker said. âItâs a big problem.â
The planning commission also approved plans Monday for an outdoor axe throwing area and pedal car rental area.
The plans called for a covered, walled area on the developmentâs front green where people can toss axes, and a pedal car rental that would include a riding area on the Mountain Mile property. The cars would not be allowed on public roads.

Iâve always envied those Theme Park Insiders who not only seem to have been to every theme and amusement park in the world, but who can talk intelligently about them and every ride they have ever ridden in technical detail. Iâve been fortunate to visit quite a few, maybe more than most, but Iâve reached the age where Iâve realized that there are still so many parks within a reasonable drive that Iâve decided I need to get to them and experience them first-hand. In April, I finally got to one of those parks that everyone kept telling me, âYou have to go there! Youâll love it!â
