US boxboard production stayed flat in March

Published by U.S. boxboard production in March 2021 remained essentially flat (-0.4%) compared to March 2020. It was down 2% when compared to the same three months of 2020. The boxboard operating rate was 94%, up 1.4 points from March 2020 and up 1.1 points year-to-date, according to the American Forest & Paper Association.   Solid bleached boxboard production in March 2021 decreased 4% compared to March 2020. It was down 4% when compared to the same three months of 2020.   Recycled boxboard production in March 2021 decreased 3% compared to March 2020. It was down 4% when compared to the same three months of 2020.   Unbleached kraft & gypsum production in March 2021 increased 9% compared to March 2020. It was up 3% when compared to the same three months of 2020.

AF&PA supports Department of Commerce s circumvention inquiry on uncoated paper from China

Published by The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock issued the following statement regarding an affirmative and preliminary ruling in a circumvention inquiry, involving uncoated paper sheeter rolls from China on existing antidumping duty (AD) and countervailing duty (CVD) orders.   “AF&PA supports the enforcement of free and fair trade laws. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s preliminary ruling in a circumvention inquiry into uncoated paper sheeter rolls from China is a positive step to ensure the U.S. paper industry operates according to fair trade principles in a highly competitive global market.   “This preliminary ruling is based on an impartial, transparent process that abides by international rules and a set of facts and evidence. AF&PA believes U.S. government enforcement of domestic and international trade rules will help safeguard the health of the U.S. paper industry, allowing markets to function properly.”

US printing-writing paper shipments decreased 20 percent in March

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its March 2021 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 20 percent in March compared to March 2020. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 18 percent in March compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased five percent when compared to February 2021.   - Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 14 percent compared to March 2020 while the inventory level decreased six percent compared to February 2021. UFS imports increased five percent while exports decreased 39 percent in February 2021. - U.S. purchases of coated free sheet (CFS) papers in March decreased 29 percent compared to last March while the inventory level decreased six percent compared to February 2021. CFS imports and exports both decreased compared to February 2020, down 23 percent and two percent respectively.

US containerboard production up 9% in March

Published by U.S. containerboard production in March 2021 increased 9% compared to March 2020. It was up 2% when compared to the same three months of 2020.  March 2021 production of containerboard for export decreased 15% compared to the same month last year; it was down 25% year-to-date. The containerboard operating rate was 98.4%, up 2.8 points from March 2020 and essentially flat (-0.3 pts.) year-to-date. Mill inventories of containerboard at the end of March decreased 77,000 short tons from the previous month and were down 56,000 short tons compared to March 2020.
