WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Vice President Kamala Harris said on Tuesday that Texas Democratic lawmakers who left the state took a courageous stand to derail Republican efforts to pass voting restrictions, likening their efforts to those of civil rights activists and suffragettes.
In an interview with Reuters, Harris said she encourages lawmakers in every state imposing voting restrictions to stand up for the right of all Americans to vote. More than 50 Democratic lawmakers left Texas on Monday to deny the state legislature the quorum required to approve Republican Governor Greg Abbott s special-session agenda.
School board races primed to explode with critical race theory backers, opponents Follow Us
Question of the Day By James Varney - The Washington Times - Tuesday, July 13, 2021
Opponents of critical race theory in K-12 education think they may have come up with a key tactic in their battle against principals and teachers adopting the left-leaning take on American history run for the school board.
The Leadership Institute, a conservative nonprofit, announced it would soon offer what it calls a “School Board Training Program” to help candidates for the often-overlooked elected positions in an effort to counter a growing and pervasive progressive influence over curriculum and material in the nation’s 17,000 public and charter school districts.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a new $17 billion K-12 education budget.
Officials say the new plan will close funding gaps in public schools throughout the state during the upcoming academic year.
Additional money will also be provided for school counselors and nurses as well as mental health programs.
The state is also expanding preschool access. The budget includes $169 million for the Great Start Readiness Program, which will cover eligible 4-year-olds.
David Hacker is the president of the Michigan arm of the American Federation of Teachers. He said, “we’re optimistic that this long overdue reform will benefit students across the state, and we look forward to seeing what comes next.”
