Jeffrey Lax says CUNY has long fostered anti-Semitism on campus Getty Images Alex Nester • June 28, 2021 6:00 pm SHARE A Jewish professor in the City University of New York (CUNY) system resigned from a teachers union affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers after it passed a resolution condemning Israel and backing the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. Jeffrey Lax, professor and chair of Kingsborough Community College s business department, resigned from the Professional Staff Congress on June 17. A week earlier, the union passed a Resolution in Support of the Palestinian People. The statement, which made no mention of Hamas s attacks, called Israel a diverse nation state guilty of committing apartheid. Lax says the statement is contradictory.

NEA and AFL-CIO face staff revolt as staff denounces anti-union tactics

NEA and AFL-CIO face staff revolt as staff denounces “anti-union tactics” Office staff at the Washington D.C. headquarters of the AFL-CIO union federation and the National Education Association (NEASO), the largest US teachers union, are locked in bitter struggle with union functionaries in its national headquarters over contract terms. Earlier this month members of the National Education Association Staff Organization (NEASO) voted overwhelmingly to strike NEA headquarters in Washington D.C. over demands by management for what amounts to a pay cut. According to staff union officials, NEA management is offering a pay raise far below the current rate of inflation and is demanding increases in out-of-pocket employee health care expenses.
