HOUSTON One of the largest teachers unions in the country, the American Federation of Teachers, is pushing for a nationwide return to in-person learning this fall.
In some parts of the U.S., virtual learning is still the only option for students. That’s led to a drop in enrollment nationally.
But here in Houston, school districts like Alief ISD are leading by example.
The district tracked a 9 percent drop in enrollment in October 2020. As the school year wraps, the district was able to attract enough students in increase enrollment by 2 percent.
Singapore put in place new restrictions, banning dining-in and limiting gatherings, as local cases rose to the highest since July. There’s a “high chance” a Hong Kong-Singapore travel bubble may not go ahead as scheduled on May 26, a Hong Kong official said.

The president of the American Federation of Teachers said Thursday there should be a full return to in-person learning in the fall and her union is “all in” on bringing students back to the classroom.
In an address on social media, Randi Weingarten said the wide availability of vaccines and a new infusion of federal education money have removed many obstacles that prevented schools from opening.
“Conditions have changed,” Weingarten said. “We can and we must reopen schools in the fall for in-person teaching, learning and support. And keep them open. Fully and safely, five days a week.”
