Chicago teachers and parents: Stop the school reopenings! Oppose the policy of social murder! Tuesday, March 16 at 7pm CT .  All who agree with this statement are encouraged to join the Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee at wsws.org/edsafety.  The Chicago Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee opposes the effort to further reopen Chicago Public Schools (CPS) under conditions of continued spread of COVID-19 and rapid growth of more dangerous strains of the virus. There are currently no conditions under which in-person schooling can be made safe. Schools must be closed and remote learning maintained and improved in order to bring the pandemic under control.

Health care workers strike Bend, Oregon, hospital

Health care workers strike Bend, Oregon, hospital More than 150 medical technicians, technologists and therapists are on strike indefinitely at the St. Charles hospital in Bend, Oregon, in a strike that began March 4. Issues concern their first contract with the hospital, pay and manageable workloads. The strike was authorized by 94 percent of the workers at the region’s primary trauma center and the largest referral hospital. The health workers on strike are represented by the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (OFNHP) Local 5017, which is an offshoot of the American Federation of Teachers. The health care workers have not secured a first contract since voting to form a union in 2019. Some of them, such as respiratory therapists, and x-ray or computerized tomography (CT) technicians, have been specially trained and function as essential caregivers for COVID-19 patients.

Inland Empire schools reopen as infection rates remain high in Southern California

Inland Empire schools reopen as infection rates remain high in Southern California The West Coast Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committees are organizing the enormous opposition among educators, parents and students to the homicidal reopening of schools throughout the region. Elementary schools in the Inland Empire a region inland of Los Angeles which is home to some four million people began opening to in-person instruction last week. This reckless move takes place even though the region remains in the state’s most dangerous “purple tier” classification, which designates infection rates higher than seven per 100,000.
