Schools round up, catch up and ramp up for fall enrollment
METRO DETROIT Along with proms and graduation ceremonies, another time-honored school tradition will likely be muddled by COVID-19.
The very first tradition, in fact: kindergarten roundup.
If it’s been some time since you’ve attended or accompanied your little one to their roundup event, it’s a night typically held in the spring at elementary schools to help families learn what they can expect for their first-time student in the coming school year.
Kiddos get the chance to tour classrooms and meet their soon-to-be teachers, so their first day of school in the fall won’t be quite so unfamiliar and fretful.

When to keep schools open, and how to do so, has been an issue plaguing the response by the United States to the pandemic since its beginning. President Joe Biden vowed to âteach our children in safe schoolsâ in his inaugural address.
On Tuesday, federal health officials weighed in with a call for returning children to the nationâs classrooms as soon as possible, saying the âpreponderance of available evidenceâ indicates that in-person instruction can be carried out safely as long as mask-wearing and social distancing are maintained.

CHARLESTON As West Virginia’s two teachers’ union file lawsuits to block a state Board of Education mandate for in-person school, Gov. Jim Justice said Thursday he applauded board members for holding their ground.
“I am really happy our schools have reopened for in-person learning. It’s going smoothly at this time,” Justice said during his coronavirus briefing Thursday at the Capitol. “I want to thank the state Board of Education for everything they’re doing to make sure the in-person learning option is made available to all of our families across the state.”
Both the West Virginia Education Association and the West Virginia chapter of the American Federation of Teachers filed injunctions Wednesday against the state Board of Education and the Department of Education. The AFT-WV suit also names Kanawha County, while the WVEA lists both Kanawha and Monongalia counties.
