Today, the arts, entertainment, and media unions affiliated with the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO (DPE) announced their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policy agenda during a digital press conference with union leaders, staff, and members. The DEI policy agenda details the legislative action the unions will urge members of Congress to support to help make their industries more representative.

After months of suspended concerts, musician furloughs and several labor charges, contract talks between Fort Wayne Philharmonic and its players continue to idle.
Musicians say they are being asked to abandon a collective bargaining agreement that has been decades in the making in favor of changes that will gut the orchestra. The Philharmonic says it needs to take steps to reduce its budget moving forward, including a reduction in the number of full-time player positions.
“Ensuring a financially sustainable future requires adjusting the business structure so the Philharmonic can live within its means,” the organization says in an email provided to The Journal Gazette by director of marketing and public relations Emily Shannon after a request for a phone interview with management was declined.

The Department for Professional Employees, a coalition of Hollywood labor unions affiliated with AFL-CIO, announced on Thursday a new policy agenda to lobby for bills that will promote diverse hiring and inclusion in the entertainment industry.
Among the legislative goals set by the unions is a push to get Congress to consider federal tax incentives for productions that come with diversity requirements, pointing to incentives already applied in states like Illinois and New York that reward productions that hire more women and people of color in front of and behind the camera.

Hollywood’s major unions have signed on with the AFL-CIO-affiliated push to advance public policy initiatives involving diversity, equity and inclusion issues.
The broad goals of the campaign spearheaded by the Department for Professional Employees (DPE), a coalition of unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO, is to strengthen collective bargaining and copyright protections and the state and federal level. On Thursday, a clutch of entertainment industry union representatives gathered for a virtual news conference to detail the policy proposals and underscore the urgency for the need for action to better protect middle-class and low-rung workers.
