Our region enjoys an abundance of arts and culture, culinary offerings and world-class beaches and parks. For many our area seems like paradise. But it’s not a paradise for everyone. Beneath the picture postcard views there is true economic insecurity for many in our region – and especially for women over the age of 55.
This shocking discovery was reported in the recently published report “Aging, Women and Economic Insecurity in Sarasota County, Florida,” by the American Association of University Women Sarasota.
Funded by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the report revealed that women’s economic insecurity over age 55 is a harsh reality at both the state and local levels. Consider the glaring inequality in Sarasota County alone: Here in “paradise,” gender and race have powerful impacts on the quality of life.
