After a proposal to regulate how social media companies moderate content failed, a Utah legislative leader is pushing forward. He hopes other states will join his effort.
Senate President Stuart Adams, R-Layton, is the newly-elected president of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, a group of conservative state legislators and private sector representatives. The organization frequently proposes model legislation for states to adopt, and Adams sees the current fight over social media as a perfect opportunity.
The year is 1535 and Saint Thomas More is on trial for high treason for refusing to acknowledge the legitimacy of King Henry VIII in an ongoing feud with the Catholic Church. More posed a now-famous question to the jury that roughly goes as follows:
“Some men say the earth is flat. Some men say the earth is round. But if it is flat. Could Parliament make it round? And if it is round. Could the king’s command flatten it?”

On Friday, April 16, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) took to the streets of Tampa to demonstrate against SB 1014 and HB 835, two anti-union bills filed in the Senate and the House of Representatives, respectively.
The two bills follow a template outlined by the American Legislative Exchange Council, commonly known as ALEC, a right-wing think tank comprised of primarily conservative state legislators and private sector representatives.
ALEC is known for their “model bills”, laws which are drafted centrally and disseminated to multiple independent legislatures. It has successfully passed hundreds of these bills since 2010, such as stand-your-ground and anti-whistleblower laws.
