PennDOT extends deadline for ‘Innovations Challenge’

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that the deadline for the fourth annual Innovations Challenge has been extended through Jan. 15, 2021.
Students in grades 9-12 regardless of their school’s learning model are invited to participate in this year’s Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative and strategic-thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers, a press release said.
This year’s Innovations Challenge asks students to develop an innovative and implementable solution that helps address Pennsylvania’s transportation revenue shortfall by identifying potential new funding streams, aside from additional gas taxes, tolls or mileage-based user fees, to help ensure adequate transportation funding for the future, according to the release.
–Local engineering firm MKN and Associates, Inc was awarded the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Merit Award for engineering design and construction management of Templeton Community Services District’s Eastside Force Main Project.
The TCSD hired MKN and Associates, Inc. to provide professional engineering design and construction management services for the district’s Eastside Force Main Project, which was completed in October 2019. The project redirected all east side flows to the Meadowbrook Wastewater Treatment Plant which increased the amount of wastewater the district could discharge to the underflow, thereby increasing the amount the district can divert at its downstream wells by an additional 242 acre-feet per year.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) announced it has received national recognition with the Envision Platinum rating for its sustainability efforts. The Envision Platinum rating is the highest-level award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, and the award is the first time a program the size and complexity of the state’s high-speed rail project has earned such an honor.
“We are proud to have achieved Envision Platinum for the high-speed rail program. This recognizes the Authority’s progress on delivering a sustainable transportation system for California,” said Meg Cederoth, the Authority’s Director of Planning and Sustainability. “We’ve sought to reflect California’s sustainability ethic while laying the foundation for carbon-free travel. This recognition is a validation of the Authority’s ability to deliver sustainable infrastructure.”

The Amazon in the Regrade project in downtown Seattle won a grand award in the 53rd Annual Engineering Excellence Awards sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies.
Magnusson Klemencic Associates of Seattle provided structural engineering for the development, which was one of five Pacific Northwest projects honored in the 2020 awards. A total of 203 preeminent engineering achievements from around the world were recognized at the gala held virtually on Dec. 1.
