What Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Did, and Didn t, Get from Congress This Week

Clean energy industry groups are cheering the last-minute inclusion of key tax incentive extensions and billions of dollars in research and development funds that found their way into the $2.4 trillion spending package and coronavirus relief bill passed by Congress on Monday night. UPDATE: President Donald Trump signed the bills into law on Sunday night, averting a government shutdown and allowing $900 billlion in relief funds to begin flowing.   But solar and wind power groups and energy storage advocates didn’t get all they’ve been asking for from Congress in the bill and they’re seeking support for those additional policies from the incoming Biden-Harris administration and lawmakers from both parties.

Fossil, Renewable Energy Advocates Alike Applaud Passing of $2 3T Spending Bill

Fossil, Renewable Energy Advocates Alike Applaud Passing of $2.3T Spending Bill Proponents of the natural gas, oil and renewable energy sectors all found something to like about a $2.3 trillion omnibus spending and coronavirus relief package passed late Monday by the House and Senate. The American Petroleum Institute (API) praised legislators for including several provisions from Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK) American Energy Innovation Act, including parts of two bipartisan bills to promote carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). “We commend the bipartisan group of lawmakers who have moved this legislation one step closer to becoming law and who understand the important role of advancing innovation and technology in addressing the risk of climate change,” said API’s Stephen Comstock, vice president of corporate policy.

ACORE Commends Congress for Including Commonsense Emergency Relief Measures for the Renewable Sector in Year-End Spending and COVID Relief Package

With 13% of the clean energy workforce out of a job this holiday season due to COVID-19, we are grateful that lawmakers included commonsense emergency relief measures for the renewable sector in this package. Extending the solar and wind tax incentives and making the investment tax credit available for offshore wind projects is a bipartisan vote of support for the renewable industry and the hundreds of thousands of Americans building our clean energy future. These policies will help get people back to work, accelerating our economic recovery and achieving greenhouse gas emissions reductions that scientists tell us are necessary to protect our climate.
