Mario Gafencu wishes the Stoneridge Inc. MirrorEye Camera Monitor System (CMS) was around when he was rolling up 2.5 million accident-free miles as a professional driver. His first 20-mile drive on a snowy January day last year was all the evidence he needed.
“Regardless of all the road spray from all the vehicles on the road that day, my view of the traffic around my vehicle was clear and unobstructed,” Gafencu recalled. ” I was no longer guessing and hoping that a vehicle was not in that right front corner by the right front steer tire. With this system, I was sure for I saw clearly the whole right side of the vehicle.”

With the words “freight efficiency” in our name and a mission to double it, you would think that the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) would have a pretty good idea of how to measure it. Like the rest of the industry, we have found it to be much more complicated than perhaps Mike Roeth, NACFE’s executive director, or anyone else who was at the founding of NACFE in 2010 may have imagined.
Ten years ago, when people spoke about freight efficiency, it still mostly meant MPG for equipment burning diesel fuel while hauling goods across long distances. There were and still are variations on MPG.
SuperTruck 3 Pushes for Electrification of Freight Trucks

The Department of Energy intends to provide up to $100 million in funding to push for the electrification of freight trucks of all sizes as part of its new SuperTruck 3 program.
A parallel, separately funded, effort will be aimed at reducing emissions and increasing efficiencies for on- and off-road vehicles, among other goals.
Transportation accounts for approximately 30% of total U.S. energy needs and generates the largest share of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to DOE.
