The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has announced nominees in all three categories of the 2020 Student Heritage Awards competition. The awards are one of many programs designed by the organization to support a new generation of talent in the early stages of their cinematography careers. Winners will be chosen on February 27.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The goal is to assist voters watching movies at home to see them more closely as the filmmakers intended a topic that has become more pressing as the pandemic has made such streaming options a necessity.

With theaters shuttered, voters have started watching this year s awards contenders online, but filmmakers worry at-home distractions and laptop viewing could diminish the impact of movies and influence voting choices.
Back in the now-halcyon days of October 2019, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled a revamped streaming service so that its members an increasingly far-flung group, as more and more international filmmakers have been recruited to join would have easy access to Oscar contenders without having to search out official screenings or even venture into actual movie theaters. The so-called Academy Screening Room, available to members via the Academy s own website as well as an app for fourth-generation Apple TV devices, was up and running.
Ruhe: Of course zero gravity was one of the challenges. That’s always interesting to do, because it’s been done so many times – it’s been done so great by a lot of people. Zero gravity is one of the challenges. The other challenge is that a lot of this spaceship interiors were pretty small places and to work in there with a big camera and the crew was challenging because it was really tight. We used a lot of the 65 in there. We use a lot of LED lighting to have space to shoot 360 degrees in there.
BTL: When it came to lighting, were there any films that you looked at for inspiration?
