Nancy Marschewski and her husband have three adopted sons who are multiracial. One of them was penalized after wearing a durag – a headscarf typically worn by Black males – to Effingham High School. Now the Effingham school board is considering a policy change. Marschewski, who is white, has taken her sons to hairdressers who specialize in Black hair. But the one her 17-year-old son usually went to stopped taking appointments during the pandemic.

EVANSTON, IL Five-term Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin announced Friday he will not run again next year.
First elected in 2002, Suffredin said he will complete the final year and a half of his term and would not support any specific successor to his 13th District Cook County and Cook County Forest Preserve Board seat.
Looking back on his two decades on the boards, Suffredin said he hopes he is remembered as someone who brought transparency and new processes to county government, leading to better services for the public.

Elder care advocates are urging state lawmakers to reduce the number of Illinoisans receiving long-term care at nursing homes after a study showing many of Illinois’ early COVID-19 deaths occurred at facilities that were both overcrowded and understaffed.
According to 2017 data reported by the AARP, 10% of residents living in Illinois nursing homes have “low care needs”, which is higher than the 8.9% national average.
Nursing home critics say because a number of facilities struggled to control viral transmissions among residents during the pandemic, the state should prioritize at-home and community-based care services.
“For too long, our state has relied on institutional settings such as nursing homes to meet the needs of seniors and people with disabilities. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced a plan to ban menthol flavored cigarettes and flavored cigars within the next year.
The FDA is “taking urgent action” to ban these “deadly products,” it declared late last month.
