Andrea Sahouri verdict: Register reporter acquitted of charges from covering protest

Des Moines Register Andrea Sahouri says her acquittal Wednesday on two criminal charges sends an important message about recognizing the rights of journalists to do their jobs. The jury made the right decision, said Sahouri, a reporter for the Des Moines Register. They made the decision to uphold democracy, a just democracy, the freedom of the press, First Amendment rights, the list goes on. Sahouri was arrested while covering the George Floyd protests in May 2020, and charged with failure to disperse and interference with official acts, both simple misdemeanors. Police claimed she remained in the area of the May 31 protest in Des Moines despite orders to leave, and tried to pull away when a Des Moines police officer pepper-sprayed her and detained her.

Groups in Iowa weigh in on Reynolds election reform bill

Created: March 09, 2021 04:03 PM (ABC 6 News) - Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a controversial new bill into law that will affect the ways in which Iowans cast their ballots in future elections. The new bill will shorten the early voting period from 29 days down to 20. It’ll also close polling places on election day an hour early. Additionally, the legislation prohibits election officials from automatically mailing absentee ballot request forms. In 2020, county auditors used mass mailings as tool that helped shatter voting records. The Iowa State Association of County Auditors says it’s concerned about the revisions to Iowa’s election laws.
