These immigrants face deportation after living in N.J. for 2 decades Updated Apr 14, 2021; A temporary restraining order is all that currently allows 22 Indonesian Christians, who overstayed their visas after fleeing violence in their native country, to remain in the Central Jersey communities they’ve lived in for more than two decades. U.S. District Judge Esther Salas eventually will lift her order and rule whether those immigrants can petition to be allowed to remain in the U.S. permanently. Briefs from both sides are due Thursday. But even if Salas rules that they can request asylum, the federal government will be able to deport them at any time before their cases are heard.
