NH senate passes bill to make secret police list public

NH senate passes bill to make secret police list public HOLLY RAMER, Associated Press FacebookTwitterEmail CONCORD, N.H. (AP) New Hampshire’s secret list of roughly 270 police officers with credibility issues would be made public under a bill passed Thursday by the state Senate. The so-called “Laurie list” tracks officers whose credibility may be called into question during a trial because of something in their personnel records. Prosecutors are required to turn the information over to defendants before trial, but public access has been limited to heavily redacted versions of the list. While the attorney general’s office and law enforcement unions traditionally have opposed the list’s release, both back the compromise legislation. Its provisions match a recommendation by the Commission on Law Enforcement Accountability, Community and Transparency that was established last summer in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Dover NH Racial Equity and Inclusion panel seeks change

The goal is to help Dover become a more inclusive and welcoming city. The committee was formed last year by the City Council passing a resolution in the wake of George Floyd being killed in Minneapolis by police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted this week of murder. The resolution affirmed that the city would condemn racism and affirm its commitment to eliminating racial inequities.  Co-chairs Dan Pontoh and Lina Shayo are leading the group, drawing on each member s diverse experience and knowledge to identify and make key recommendations to eliminate outdated policies that may contribute to systemic racism in municipal operations, and to offer new solutions for the city to be more representative and responsive to historically underrepresented and underserved communities, particularly communities of color, immigrants, and refugees.

Talk about a lack of vision. Body cameras are an important tool in the national drive to make law enforcement more accountable and transparent. Communities and states that fail to equip their police officers with body cameras are “really not being responsible,” said George Ostler, a criminal defense lawyer for nearly 40 years whose office is in Norwich.
