In Jacob K. Javits Professorship Lecture, Deborah Archer and Melissa Murray consider democracy, inequality, and civil unrest
Professor of Clinical Law Deborah Archer and Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law Melissa Murray, co-recipients of the 2021 Jacob K. Javits Visiting Professorship at NYU, engaged in a discussion titled “Democracy, Inequality, and Civil Unrest” for the 2020-21 Jacob K. Javits Professorship Lecture on March 30.
The virtual conversation, moderated by Dean Trevor Morrison, brought together two leading legal minds. Archer, an expert on civil rights, civil liberties, and racial justice, is faculty co-director of NYU Law’s Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law and director of the Civil Rights Clinic; she was recently named president of the American Civil Liberties Union. Murray, faculty director of the Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Network, is an authority on family law, constitutional law, and reproductive rights and justice.

Politicians, rights activists and family members and even world leaders reacted with jubilation and relief Tuesday as sacked Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd, a Black man who died when the officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes last year.
Here are some the immediate reactions following the announcement of the guilty verdicts on all three counts second degree murder, third degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
White House
Biden welcomed the verdict, saying Floyd’s death was “a murder in full light of day, and it ripped the blinders off for the whole world” to see systemic racism.
Now heâs making up for lost time.
The Georgia State University Perimeter College Honors student interned for U.S. Congressman Hank Johnson and is a recipient of a Congressional Black Caucus scholarship. He is a former Student Government Association leader and one of just two student members of Georgia Stateâs Committee for the Advancement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Melvin also was recognized at his job with Georgia Stateâs Campus Recreational Services, where he won a recreational services award for service excellence.
Now he can add another achievement to his list.
Melvin is a semifinalist for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Winners of the competitive award, expected to be announced in late April, are judged on factors such as leadership, service to others and academic ability. It is the largest private scholarship for â¯two-year and community college transfer students in the country.
