Yes, the city of Sarasota is expected to receive $10.9 million from the federal government’s $1.9 trillion COVID relief package. But, no, the cash should not be viewed as an invite to some giddy civic spending spree.
First, as Sarasota City Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch noted in an interview with the Herald-Tribune Editorial Board, city officials still need to study the exact parameters on how the American Relief Plan money can be used. And let’s face it: huge stacks of cash usually come with plenty of strings firmly attached to the bag holding them. Don t hold your breath hoping there will be some magical exception to that rule when it comes to the $10.9 million we re supposed to receive.

Chuck Schumer on his visit to Jamestown Monday said the recently approved American Rescue Plan would cut the child poverty rate in half in the United States. He said an estimated 45-percent of children in Jamestown live in poverty,
“When a child is born into poverty they don’t get proper food and nutrition, they don’t get proper schooling, they don’t get proper healthcare, they don’t get proper housing, and by the time they’re a young adult their climb out of that ditch is very steep.”

LISBON With about $20 million anticipated for just the county from new $1.9 trillion American Relief Plan, county Commissioner Mike Halleck on Wednesday talked about the lack of information so far about what the money can be spent on.
The money is expected to come in two amounts with about $10 million this year and another $10 million next year. The municipalities in the county also are expected to receive additional money.
After voicing concerns, Halleck said he has received a call from Sen. Sherrod Brown talking about the Covid-19 money and getting some clarifications on some of the questions about which projects do and do not qualify for the money.
