The I.R.S. is said to push the tax-filing deadline back to May 15. Alan Rappeport © Al Drago for The New York Times The Internal Revenue Service has faced mounting pressure to give Americans more time to file their tax returns.
The Internal Revenue Service will again give Americans extra time to file their taxes as a result of the pandemic, according a congressional aide briefed on the decision.
Instead of the usual April 15 deadline, filers will instead have until May 15, said the aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made. The extra time is intended to ease the burden on filers dealing with the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic, which has put millions out of work or cut back their hours.

A new waiver changes how much you are taxed on unemployment income. Author: Romney Smith Updated: 7:44 PM EDT March 16, 2021
CLEVELAND Tax day is exactly one month away and things are getting a little confusing because the IRS just changed the rules when it comes to unemployment benefits.
Anyone who filed taxes early who claimed unemployment were taxed on that income.
But Henry Grzes with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants says there’s not much you can do right now.
“For those individuals who have already filed their 2020 tax returns, the IRS has come out with a communication saying ‘just stop’. Don’t file an amended return at this point in time. We’re working through the system as to whether or not and we will give you guidance as to how to get that additional tax money back,” says Grzes.
