The destruction wrought by COVID-19 represents an unprecedented crisis in recent history, yet it somehow feels eerily familiar. This is because the pandemic has mirrored many of the dynamics of the climate crisis, but on an extremely compressed time frame. An imminent global threat presented itself the full extent of the danger being largely unknown which required swift, coordinated and collective action. Instead, it was met with divergent national responses, finger pointing, appeals to individual responsibility and extreme resistance to any fundamental change to the status quo.

Every week, the White House sends out the Coronavirus Task Force’s “red zone” reports to each state, tailoring infection data and recommendations by region. Some governors publicly release these documents, but in Florida, journalists have had to fight for access. What’s happened with these reports is a good example of how the Sunshine State handles COVID-19 information. The state’s Department of Health collects a massive amount of information but holds some of it back. There’s a private competitor that calculates the infection rate in its own way. And the city of Miami has its own data hub. In the absence of consistent information, the state has yet to implement consistent COVID policy. So just why is the Florida government holding back state COVID data? And what changes are needed to improve its policy? To answer these questions, I spoke with Mary Ellen Klas, the Tallahassee bureau chief for the Miami Herald, on Wednesday’s episode of What Next

If you invest in “socially responsible” funds, say big investment funds like BlackRock, Parnassus, TIAA-CREF, etc., then they’ll do good things for the world, and your retirement funds will grow.
These funds obsess about what they call Environmental, Social and Governance factors. For example, Parnassus says it picks investments based on “their environmental impact, how they treat their employees, the quality of their relationships with local communities.”
People believe. More than $100 billion poured in just in the first half of this year.

One popular “socially responsible” fund, Generation Investments, is run by former Vice President Al Gore. His website claims they invest in “sustainable” companies that do things “consistent with a low-carbon, prosperous, equitable, healthy and safe society.”
