The state s American Legion organization is investigating why a veteran s microphone was cut during a Hudson Memorial Day ceremony when he discussed the role Black Americans played in establishing the holiday.
An investigation is underway after a veteran’s microphone was cut off as his Memorial Day speech ventured into how former slaves in Charleston, South Carolina helped start the holiday when they dug up the remains of 200 Union soldiers to give them a proper burial shortly after the Civil War ended.
In his Memorial Day speech, a retired Army Lt. Col. wanted to recognize the role Black people played in the formation of what we now know as Memorial Day. But he was literally silenced when event organizers cut his mic, later saying that section of the speech was "not relevant."
