WELLSVILLE One of Wellsville’s oldest cemeteries is set for a “long overdue” restoration in 2021.
The American Legion Riders Post 702 plans to tackle some major improvements to Johnson Cemetery later this year. Johnson Cemetery, which sits next to Jones Memorial Hospital, entered the spotlight in recent months with JMH planning to construct a new parking area a short distance from the cemetery.
The route will navigate around the historic cemetery, which has fallen into disrepair over the years.
“American Legion Riders Post 702 is very interested in bringing back some dignity to the cemetery. It’s in a bad state of affairs right now,” said Town Supervisor Shad Alsworth. “They have an awful lot of volunteers willing to donate materials, time and energy to go down there and help improve the cemetery.”

GRANDVIEW â Each live, balsam wreath proudly donated by 75 donors comprised of families, community groups and local businesses placed by joyful volunteers before the 521 veteransâ graves at the Grandview Cemetery on Saturday morning, was a heartfelt gift of respect and appreciation as their names were voiced out loud to ensure they were not forgotten.
The ring of remembrance echoed soundly during the 2020 National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 19. Grandviewâs 10th annual December event commenced at the Cemetery Road location, an extension of Elm Street about one mile north of town.
The 9 a.m. ceremony joined together with 2,557 participating locations where grateful Americans placed 1.7 million veteran wreaths to honor their heroes.
