Dairies need progress on ag labor reform

It’s good to know I’m above average, I guess? Everyone has an entire shelf for their cheeses in the fridge, right? Americans like their cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream. And with the innovation currently underway in the dairy industry for new food products and new ways to use dairy as a food ingredient, the U.S. dairy industry is poised to grow, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. But we need a steady and reliable source of labor if it’s going to grow to meet the potential that’s there.

Conservation advances must do no harm

The American Farm Bureau Federation has called on the Biden administration to act responsibly in conservation efforts. Specifically, President Biden’s goal to conserve at least 30 percent of our lands and waters by 2030, commonly referred to as “30x30,” is raising questions. Three key requests are outlined in a letter to President Biden: that the administration provide clarity on the initiative; that the effort recognizes voluntary conservation efforts already underway; and that the administration seeks input from farmers and ranchers. In his letter, American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall noted, “This ‘30x30’ goal has received a great deal of attention in farming and ranching communities across the country. America’s agriculturalists are asking whether their good work will be recognized by the administration.
