Donald Trump Again Backs Stefanik for GOP Chair but Rival Chip Roy Has More Conservative Record

Former President Donald Trump reiterated his endorsement of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as House GOP Conference chair after the more conservative Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) announced his candidacy on Thursday.
Trump insisted that Roy had not done a great job in Congress and was likely to be primaried in the 2022 midterm elections. The former president cheered on Cheney s removal on Wednesday after denouncing her following her vote to impeach him for inciting the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

HOUSE GOP ADDS MODERATE TO LEADERSHIP. For many years, the American Conservative Union the group that puts together the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC has issued ratings of members of Congress. They select key votes, compile how each member voted and publish the percentage of times the member aligned with conservative positions as defined by ACU.
In 2020, 48 conservative Republicans had ratings between 90% and 100%. Fifty-three had ratings between 80% and 89%. Smaller numbers were at 79% and lower see the chart below from ACU:

After firing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as House Republican Conference chair on Wednesday, GOP lawmakers needed to pick a new #3 for their leadership team in the chamber. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) was the obvious frontrunner, having received endorsements from, among others, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Donald Trump.
