Their View: Keep nuclear plants operating in Illinois

Two Illinois nuclear power plants, Byron and Dresden, are due for premature closure this year. The two plants are licensed to operate for another 10 to 20 years, but have been slated for closure in September and November. Illinois lawmakers must act, and act now, to prevent this.
Last year, Gov. Pritzker advocated for the passage of a comprehensive energy bill to put Illinois on a course for a carbon-free power industry, and importantly, 90% of Illinois’ clean energy is currently produced by nuclear power. Byron alone generates enough power for more than 2.3 million homes.
Biden’s Green New Deal won’t work without mining, especially for rare earth elements
As Joe Biden and Kamala Harris take the reins of government and launch their program to “transition” America away from fossil fuels, they need to consider some hard realities. Chief among them is that no Green New Deal can succeed without major increases in US mining and processing – unless they want to make America even more dependent on China and Russia.
Rare-earth metals are essential to 21st Century technologies, including smartphones, lasers, night vision systems, weapons guidance systems – and GND technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles. As British hedge fund veteran James Horrocks noted in a recent article, “It is easy to see why rare earths have become a pawn in the US-China trade war.”

Daniel’s face dropped when I read him the tweet. He’d already seen it, but it still stung. It was launched at him by a stranger on Twitter by a man with the last name González, ironically just days earlier. I was 20 minutes into my interview with Di Martino, and this was the first time his smile was replaced by a straight face.
His words were slow and measured. “Look, I think that the American people are some of the nicest people in the world,” he said, drawing out each syllable. “I’m just worried about people, you know, the ones who tweet stuff like that. The isolationist, nationalist, xenophobic wing that wants to take over the party.”
