I enjoyed a busy but great day May 1. It was made great by a variety of youth groups, Abilene’s four United Supermarket locations and their customers and employees.
If you went to one of those stores between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day, you were probably met by Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Girl Scout or Trail Life/American Heritage Girls members, offering you a flyer and encouraging you to pick up a couple of extra items for Food Bank of West Central Texas.
Boy, did you ever respond! Combined, the four locations brought in 2,649 pounds of food items. In addition, even though it wasn’t requested, customers donated $1,451 for the Food Bank to purchase additional needed items.
Sweet Potatoes, Volunteers, and the Gospel

“Come help us package and distribute four thousand pounds of sweet potatoes.” The appeal came last week via email from my church. Yes, it was for real. (More on the potatoes below.) Then, Sunday morning in Sunday school class I was given the “opportunity” to teach fifth graders on a Sunday this summer – just one Sunday. Always plenty of opportunities for volunteers.
Next, I came into the office Monday morning to discover that this is National Volunteer Week 2021. I trust you’ve been a volunteer.
I’m certain you’ve had countless opportunities to volunteer – coach kids’ athletics, serve on neighborhood watch, lead American Heritage Girls or Trail Life (for boys) groups, tackle community projects, teach Sunday school, chaperone student field trips, be a classroom mom, bring your tools for church clean-up day. The list could be endless.

BRETT: In the months since the passing of Rush, one of the things that has struck me consistently was how many people had such high regard for what it was Rush was able to do. Not just behind the Golden EIB Microphone, and not just as a trailblazer in talk radio or the accolades and achievements as a Hall of Fame broadcaster and a winner a winner for 30-plus years behind the microphone and, of course, being honored by President Trump State of the Union Address last year. What I hear so much from so many is how charitable the force of EIB was.
